Explosion Onboard INS Ranvir, Three Navy Personnel Killed, Navy Chief Extends Condolences

Mumbai: In an unfortunate incident at Naval Dockyard Mumbai, three Navy personnel were killed and 11 injured in an explosion aboard the destroyer INS Ranvir on January 18.

The Navy in its statement said, “In an unfortunate incident at Naval Dockyard Mumbai, three naval personnel succumbed to injuries caused by an explosion in an internal compartment on-board INS Ranvir. The ship’s crew responded immediately and brought the situation under control quickly, it said. “No major material damage has been reported.”

INS Ranvir had been on cross-coast operational deployment from the Eastern Naval Command since November 2021 and was due to return to the base port shortly. A Board of inquiry has been ordered into the cause, it added.

The Navy said on January 19: “Adm R Hari Kumar, CNS and all personnel of Indian Navy extend heartfelt condolences to the families of Krishan Kumar MCPO I, Surinder Kumar MCPO II and AK Singh MCPO II, who succumbed to injuries caused by the unfortunate incident onboard INS Ranvir on January 18, 2022.”

“We fully stand by with the families in this difficult time,” it added.

INS Ranvir – a Destroyer ship was commissioned in April 1986 and is one of the oldest warships in the Navy.
