New Delhi. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat made a renewed push for the establishment of the delayed Indian Defence University (IDU).

Meanwhile efforts are also being made by officials to get the nod from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office for the passage of the draft bill on establishment of IDU.

The plan to establish the IDU was first raised 53 years ago, as an institution for addressing deficiencies in India’s security management and formulate policies on strategic challenges.

Later in 2013, months ahead of the general elections of 2014, the foundation of the IDU was laid. It’s establishment is one of the key priorities for CDS Rawat.

Pushing the matter for action, the office of CDS is finalising a date to brief the Chief of the three armed forces and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on the IDU. However, the IDU, once established would not come under the administration of the Department of Military Affairs which is headed by the CDS, but under the Department of Defence which is headed by Defence Secretary.
